After Sonic and his friends got a hold of all of the chaios emeralds, they headed to a desert right outside of Emerald City and got all 7 of them. They created a crater wiping out sonic and his friends. Crater Gulch has been the battle ground for war, blood shed, and other things.
An area that was recently discovered by the geologist that were sent into a different dimension. They then kept the hole open; however, egg man's men found another way in and took over the Volcano and use it for power.
